Comment: module 190301Fa we need the counter balance valves updated as they have not been used like that since 1975. Newer CB valves have 2 sence line (one for each side of the circuit)

Comment: I like the new images in 301fA however, now the schematics have issues, like they left out the sense lines to open the system relief or the filter bypass leaving no way to open the valves in figure 30. The students already struggle with understanding sense lines and now they’re missing? Or how about discussing the system relief is adjustable and how to adjust it with images yet forgetting the adjustable indicator in five of the seven schematic images that use a system relief through the module. This one has the unloader valve adjustable but not the system relief. Or how about figure 51 which was resolved previously has now gone back to incorrect which has a sense line going all the way to the cylinder to control the pump, this will not work either. 0 PSI on the cylinder can not hydraulically make the pump vary it’s output which it would have to? The pump sense line comes from the pump output not the cylinder.

Comment: The module bouncing around between Open, Closed & Hydrostatic systems is confusing. I understanding building on each system little by little but bouncing around between the 3 system types is confusing for studying and is a waste of time when trying to review information and needing to search different areas of the book because one system is broken up 3 times. the book is layed out open, closed, hydo, open, closed, hydro, open, closed, hydro, test. laying it out open, closed, hydro, test would be much simpler for review and study. A coloured version of figure 25 should be included into module A190301J to eliminate the need to COLOUR THE DIAGRAM if somebody has PURCHASED TO COLOURED GRAPHICS PACKAGE, figure 26 is included in the optional module but 25 is missing, intentional or not this is still frustrating and should be changed.

Comment: This particular ILM has been a problem for the entire 15 years I have been instructing the third period HET program. I have seen comments in past years that this module needs to be rewritten so that it flows better and follows the objectives. For example, Objective 1 states "Interpret common mobile equipment hydraulic system schematics", yet when one reads through the objective, that is not the case. Various system types are introduced to varying levels in this objective and then the information is dropped until later objectives. When instructing this ILM, the students are very frustrated as I have to ask them to jump from, for example, page 7 to page 17 in order to cover open center hydraulic systems and then jump back for constant horsepower, and so on. As I stated earlier, this ILM needs to be rewritten in order to achieve the objectives it is meant to achieve, and in a logical fashion so the students can learn the material easier.

Comment: module 190301g in the constant horse power section it refers to the NFC (negative flow control) repeatedly but never shows it, also what the job of the power shift regulator is and even a schematic of a system.

Comment: Update the images. All the equipment is 20+ years old. That crane should be a modern tele handler. That ditching backhoe is from the last century.

Comment: A follower valve is referenced but never shown or explained. If the intent is to explain a system that is used in a cat scraper there needs to be a picture or schematic to explain

Comment: Figure 16 - neither of those show a steering joystick. We have an old Bobcat lever - not relevant and an excavator joystick. How about a Cat grader or a joystick steer wheel loader? Figure 17 - hand metering unit with zero information. Also it is a picture if a Cat scraper with a very unique follower piston design, not there are only three hoses. Not a common steering system design.

Comment: A better schematic. An old Cat 988 design is hardly relevant. Neutralizer valve systems are not common.

Comment: What is this diagram supposed to show? A proper schematic of a unit that has a priority valve, maybe load sense. A wheel loader would be an idea. Under it talks about priority valve but that never comes up again in the module. Overall, this module needs significant content/writing updates and is not well written.

Comment: Can we find a better picture than a TEREX reservoir? Is the description of a reservoir really needed? This is covered earlier in the modules and this space could be better used on actual steering systems. Pressure control valve section - barely readable "pre established system of balance". Figure 13 needs to be replaced. Flow control valves - use of a flow divider is outdated and is not used on current/new builds. No mention of priority valves. Figure 14 and 15 also need to be updated/replaced. Steering directional control valves - zero explanation of how a hand metering unit works.

Comment: Should the module be making recommendations on filter purchasing? Modern aftermarket filters meet or exceed the OEM and the module seems to be advising to purchase OEM. Figure 26 is that Fram vs OEM filter?

Comment: Fig 27 needs to be updated. Fig 28 is old and is poor angle to show articulation and steering. Description of supplementary steering is wrong (an auxiliary pump provides additional pressure?) Wheel lean - is overexplained/has redundant mentions in the text. Fig 30 - how about a construction size loader the students have a chance of seeing Fig 37 - explain how is this determining anything? Fig 43 - image is flow testing aux couplers, nothing to do with steering

Comment: There are 19 Self-Test questions at the end of the ILM with 10 of them being of the 'True-False' type, 8 being 'Short Answer' and only 1 of the 'Multiple Choice' type. It would be beneficial to students' learning if the 'True-False' questions were rewritten into 'Multiple Choice' questions as 'True-False' questions do establish thorough understanding of course material among other reasons for not using 'True-False' questions for assessment and learning.
